Museum's Taste of the Orient

http://www.fresco.co.uk/?page=NewsSingle&itemid=8

When designer Adam Simmonite is putting together an exhibition for one of the museums he works for he is likely to get in touch with Fresco. We have produced print for exhibitions on Romans and on an Ancient British chariot. This time it's some large dye-sublimated window blinds for an exhibition about China.

As the eyes of the world focus on Beijing, host city for the Olympic Games, Wakefield Museum is showing how the distant land of China has changed life in the city over several centuries.

In the 1700s and 1800s Chinese pottery, silk and tea was a must-have for wealthy families in Wakefield. Today, most of the clothes we wear, the products we use, and the toys we play with have Made in China stamped on them. The Chinese takeaway is even more popular than fish and chips.

The exhibition covers many themes, from tea to Chinese pottery, each boasting a rich mixture of objects from the museum's social history and decorative art collections and items kindly lent by Wakefield people.

Wakefield's principal cultural officer (history), Christine Johnstone, said: "I think visitors to this exhibition will be amazed by two things - the wonderful collection of Chinese artefacts looked after by our museums service, and how important China is and always has been to our lives here, thousands of miles away."

Getting schoolchildren to belt up

http://www.fresco.co.uk/?page=NewsSingle&itemid=7

Educational resources are a Fresco speciality and we are proud to have designed the literature and promotional material for a safety campaign that has been so successful in saving lives in Yorkshire that health secretary Alan Johnson wants to roll out the whole thing nationally.

Highlighted in the press as well as on radio and TV, the "Seatbelt On" Campaign uses school assemblies to get the message across. For primary schools these feature giant magnetic puzzles and giant foam hands - both from Fresco. For this age group we designed booklets on a comic book format and came up with concepts around a young superhero. even producing a couple of superhero masks for the photoshoot. Not something we do every day.

Each child gets a fun booklet with the facts about booster seats and so on to take home to work through with their parents. This approach seems to have been very successful and two different booklets were produced, one for 4-6 year olds and another for 7-11 year olds.

Secondary schoolchildren see a film of the aftermath of a fatal car crash. This and the 11-16 booklet are altogether more direct and very hard-hitting, shocking even. Grungey graphics are backed up by the use of The Fray's song "How to Save a Life" on the car-crash DVD.

Fresco was selected to design this campaign partly because of our many years of involvement with road safety and interactive learning. The next stage of the seatbelt campaign will be literature aimed at those who drive for a living. Getting taxi drivers to belt up may be difficult...

Magic PictureCarpet flies to the Orient

http://www.fresco.co.uk/?page=NewsSingle&itemid=4

A reference to "Walking in a Winsted Wonderland" may sound approximately seasonal (if somewhat inevitable) except that this particular walking will be done in the Middle East.

Winsted have been making leading-edge technical furniture solutions for 40 years and are showing at InterSEC (a security industry exhibition) in Dubai. Wanting to attract attention with something a bit special that will support their products without competing with them, they decided to extend their message to the floor of their booth and commissioned Fresco to print 250 unique carpet tiles. These are winging their way to the East even as I write this.

Fresco's unique PictureCarpet tiles are contract quality, individually dye-sublimation printed with vibrant colours. The heat-transfer and vacuum print process gets the dye right into the weave and rub-tests show that the tiles gives up before the image! However much footfall they get, they can be confident that their visitors get the right message.

PictureCarpet tiles can be used to form images as big as you like and, should one tile get damaged, a replacement can be individually supplied. Our Magic Carpet is not just for exhibitions, it looks great in museums, foyers, reception areas etc. We have even supplied them to roadshows. Let your imagination run riot!

On the other hand, if you'd like a desk that makes you feel like you run the world from your headquarters deep inside an extinct volcano take a look at www.winsted.co.uk. I'm sure they could bring your fantasies to life and when they do, please feel free to ask us for a World Map carpet on which to pace up and down, stroking a cat and laughing to yourself...

Ice rink banners in a hurry

http://www.fresco.co.uk/?page=NewsSingle&itemid=2

Fresco's coolest

It didn't quite get to the point of crampons and ice-axes but a certain amount of daring and devil-may-care ruggedness was needed when Fresco were commissioned to produce and fit sixty banners for the open air-ice rink at the Piece Hall in Halifax, West Yorkshire last week.

And Fresco's printers had to get their skates on too in order to get the work out of the door before the public tumbled onto the ice. Some of the final designs were not agreed until a couple of days before the rink was due to be grandly opened by no less a dignitary than the Mayor of Calderdale.

Who turned up complete with reindeer and elves.

Well actually no, not that, but it makes a nice festive picture... ..Anyway, our team of intrepid Frescomen did venture out onto the ice, possibly in their longest undergarments, and the results of their heroism did appear fleetingly on TV on Saturday.

Paul McRae who organised the whole thing on Calderdale Council's behalf was delighted with the banners and congratulated Fresco on their speed and pluck. Adrian, himself a member of the crack team that walked unsupported to the centre of the ice, is a skater and photographer so, if he ever gets around to taking his girlfriend to the rink, expect some better pictures.

Though probably no elves or sleighs.. but festive anyway.

Website relaunched with powerful new features

http://www.fresco.co.uk/?page=NewsSingle&itemid=1

Well, it's been a while in the making but finally it's time to go out and buy a bottle of Vimto. Maybe two. One to share in little paper cups and the other to crack over someone's monitor.

Please don't try this at home. Electrically it may well be unsound.

Did you ever hear the story about the cleaning lady who rang the night shift at Apple Support to say that she had spilt tea over a computer keyboard and what to do? Thinking on his feet the support person said "No problem, unplug it and rinse it under the tap it will be dry by morning"

Next day Support got a call asking why they had told the cleaner to wash up a laptop.

Anyway apart from that, we hope you will all find this site really user-friendly, helpful and, well, friendly. Any questions, feedback please get in touch.

Oh, and please bear with us while we find the last of the bugs. As long as there's not one in my Vimto.
